Basketball and Soccer

9th May 2011

St Josephs recently attended the annual Down Vikings basketball tornament held in St McCartans PS.  It was a really enjoyable tounament and a great reward for all the hard work the children did in the after school basketball club.  During the group matches St Joseph's won 3 drew 1 and lost 1 of their matches which qualified them in 3rd place for the semi finals.  Despite taking a 4-2 lead they lost a fantastic match to the eventual winners and hosts St MCartans.  Well done to all the boys but in particular to the player voted MVP in the tournament.

On Friday 25th June St Joseph's entered a World Cup Soccer Competition in Kilmore playing fields.  Despite fielding a very young side including boys and girls from P4, P5 and P6 they acquitted themselves extremely well after being allocated Spain as their country.  Playing against older teams they lost their opening two matches but recovered to win three and draw one of their next four.  This included a victory against St Brigids who had a 100% record up until then.   Hopefully this will be of great benefit to the young team for all their matches next year.  Well done to all the boys and girls!  Thank you also to Seamus Heath and his coaches for a great tournament and all their hard work this year organising the East Down League and Cup.  They have set super standards and St Joseph's appreciate all the work they do to promote soccer in the locality.
