P.6 Egg-speriment!

21st Mar 2025

For our WAU topic, The Human Body, P6 have been learning about teeth. Primary 6 conducted an experiment to discover the effects different liquids have on our teeth.

We used eggs in our experiment as their shells are similar to our tooth enamel. An egg was placed into a cup containing different liquids. We used water, orange juice, Coke, tea and coffee. After 24 hours, the eggs were observed to see if any changes had happened to the shells and to see which liquid would cause the most damage to the eggs.

To make our investigation a fair test, we used eggs of a similar size and colour, the same amount of liquid in each cup and the same amount of time each egg spent in the liquid. Primary 6 then wrote up our investigation including their own prediction of the impact the liquids will have on the enamel of the ‘teeth’ and a labelled diagram of our experiment.

Results: After 24 hours, the water did not damage the eggshells but the eggs in the coke, tea and coffee turned a dark brown. The shell of the egg in the orange juice was partially dissolved. The results showed water being the healthiest for your teeth.
