Primary 5/6 Make A Viking Sword

7th Feb 2012

On the 7th of February Glenn who is a blacksmith came in to help us make a sword for our Viking topic. He has a gas mobile forge to melt the metal and when it came out it was red at the top from the heat. It was so hot Glen had to put it into water to cool it and when he did steam came out from the metal. Then he showed us a sword he made earlier. Glenn put markings on it because Vikings used to put their names on their swords because they were so valuable to them. After a while it stated to get into a shape of sword it looked really good. It was flat and curved at the top. Glenn let us have a go at hitting it on the anvil, it was really hard because the hammer was heavy and you had to keep lifting it up and down I got the hang of it after a while. He used a diamond tool to sharpen the sword but not too much or somebody could get hurt. When we were finished it looked like a real sword from Viking times.
